I fail to see why I should "look at the lashes for alcohol in Saudi Arabia" as "06forty" suggests, when this debate is about religious schools, not how much religion should "interfere" in the criminal justice system.

They should be supported but not given the same funds as normal schools. State schools should not also be religious- look at the lashes for alcohol in Saudi Arabia.

Herb's statement that Muslim schools should be prohibited on the grounds of 'national security' and 'social cohesion' shows his ignorance. He seems to be suggesting that Muslim schools are a breeding ground for terrorists and i feel that this is utterly ridiculous and simply proves to show his racism. Also frankly comments like those that Herb expressed do more to break down social cohesion than religious schools do and frankly I was not surprised to read that you were thinking of becoming a BNP party member. Muslim schools offer a good (or even a very good) standard of education to those children who wish to be taught within an Islamic environment. Therefore I believe that so long as religious schools do not bar people with other beliefs then there is no reason why they shouldn’t exist and be funded by the government. The important issue seems to me to be whether the religious school is multi-religion/multicultural where all are accepted and respected. Where a school is mono-religious then it becomes exclusive and problems are likely to occur and in this case I feel that perhaps the school should not be government funded.

A religious school is still a school and should be supported by the government. We should celebrate our Christian origins and in this way I agree with Herb's comment based on Muslim religious schools.

I voted "No" on this one, but at the same time I think state funding should be available to religious schools only if they meet standards that ensure a well-balanced education. Having said that however, I also believe Muslim religious schools should be absolutely prohibited. Some people may say that this would be discriminatory. Of course it would, but that does not make it wrong. The real test should not be whether the type of school tends to seriously undermine social cohesion or is potentially dangerous to National security - and Islamic schools must fail on both counts.
